Call to Prayer

Welcome today to this sacred place, and
thank you for making time to join us. Each day in this Temple dedicated
to the pursuit of peace, we pray to God for peace in our world. In
addition, each day we pray for a different country.
Today we will hold up the people of Guyana in our prayers. Located in
South America, Guyana achieved independence from the United Kingdom in
1966 and became a republic in 1970. Guyana has immense waterfalls, vast
tropical rainforest and savanna teeming with wildlife. Globalization and
neoliberal economics dictate that Guyana's pristine environment will be
under intense pressure from transnational companies seeking logging and
mining concessions for the foreseeable future. These environmental
issues are not the only threats to present-day Guyana. Higher crime
rates, worsening poverty and political instability contribute to the
troubles. Guyana's high debt burden to foreign creditors and territorial
disputes with Suriname and Venezuela continue to hamper the government.
Let us not forget the part we must play in the search for peace in our
time and for our day. We pray to you, Lord God, that you will receive
us, in the name of Jesus Christ our Savior. Amen. |

First of all, I urge that prayers be
offered for everyone—petitions, intercessions and thanksgivings—and
especially for rulers and those in authority, so that we may be able to
live godly and reverent lives in peace and quiet. |

BOOK OF COMMON WORSHIP
Remember, O Lord, the people of the world divided into many nations and
tongues. Deliver us from every evil that gets in the way of your saving
purpose; and fulfill the promise of peace on earth among men with whom
you are pleased; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Deliver us:
From the curse of war and the sin of man that causes war.
From pride that turns its back on you, and from unbelief that will not
call you Lord;
From national vanity that poses as patriotism; from loud-mouthed
boasting and blind self-worship that admit no guilt;
From the self-righteousness that will not compromise, and from
selfishness that gains by the oppression of others;
From the lust for money or power that drives men to kill;
From trusting in the weapons of war, and mistrusting the councils of
peace;
God of our lives: by the power of your Holy Spirit, we have been drawn
together by one baptism into one faith, serving one Lord and Savior. Do
not let us tear away from one another through division or hard argument.
May your peace embrace our differences, preserving us in unity, as one
body of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. |

Prayers of the People
Please join us now, praying the Prayers of the People. During the
moments of silence, you are invited to pray silently or meditate. |
| |
Great God of all nations, races, and creeds, we praise
you. You are our refuge in times of trial and our joy in times of
celebration. |
| The People Pray in Silence |

You are the fount of intelligence by which we earn our bread and seek to
serve you. Be with us, we pray, and guide us in your ways of peace. |
| The People Pray in Silence |

Heal our brokenness, forgive our sins, and lead us into paths of peace,
we humbly pray. This day we especially ask for your blessings on the
people and the nation of Guyana. May they use the resources that you
have entrusted them wisely, for the good of all. |

| Sending Forth |
| |
We conclude our service today with ministry of music. We
invite you to remain in the quiet of this place to pray or meditate for
as long as you may wish.
Let us now answer that call of peace that is generated by Jesus the
Christ and build peace in our time. Go in peace, and the God of peace
will bless you. Amen. |
